Hospital car parking: the impact of access costs In the UK parking charges are an important source of income for hospitals (typically around 0.25% of income) and the opportunity cost of dropping charges is a reduction in resources available for patient care. However, the stress caused by hospital parking is largely avoidable. Hospitals should be encouraged to make the parking experience as unstressful as possible for patients and visitors by, for example, providing clear and easily accessible information on parking charges and policy, sources of financial support and the availability of permits or season tickets for regular users.
