Taking Drugs Seriously: A Demos and UK Drug Policy Commission report on legal highs   It is 40 years since the Misuse of Drugs Act became law, and the ‘drug problem’ is no nearer being solved. Taking Drugs Seriously argues that it is time for a new approach to policy making, legislation and debate on drugs issues, focusing on developing consensus while building better evidence about what works.  A background paper, which reviewed international experiences of regulating new psychoactive substances, was prepared for this project by Professor Peter Reuter of the University of Maryland, and published by UKDPC - Options for regulating new psychoactive drugs: a review of recent experiences

reporting and business improvements was useful and enabled comparison of performance over time.

Collaboration between local health and local government agencies for health improvement (Review)   Although agencies appear enthusiastic about inter-agency collaboration, methodological flaws in the primary studies and incomplete implementation of initiatives have prevented the development of a strong evidence base. If these flaws are addressed in future studies (for example by providing greater detail on the implementation of programs, using more robust designs, with integrated process evaluations and measurement of health outcomes) it could provide a better understanding of what might work and why.

Investigative Panel on a socially sustainable housing system for Australia The project drew together a panel of experts from Australia and the UK to consider how a more socially sustainable housing system could be achieved in Australia. The panel observed that the current Australian housing system was poorly placed to deal with immediate and longer-term challenges. They noted that affordability was declining and housing supply was constrained. Keeping the child in mind: child protection practice and parental mental health   The authors state that there have been few studies that examine the prevalence of parental mental health disorders in child protection matters, including the types of mental health disorders associated with protective concerns for children. Similarly, little is known about how child protection workers identify parental mental health disorders, what they classify as such, and how this impacts upon their decision-making. This project was conducted in response to this gap in knowledge. It seeks to identify the numbers of substantiated child abuse and neglect cases in South Australia where parental mental health difficulties have been identified as a significant risk factor.
