Behaviour change  a year-long investigation by the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee into the way the Government tries to influence people’s behaviour using behaviour change interventions – finds that “nudges” used in isolation will often not be effective in changing the behaviour of the population. Instead, it recommends that a whole range of measures – including some regulatory measures – will be needed to change behaviour in a way that will make a real difference to society’s biggest problems.

NHS Referral to Treatment statistics sets out the definitions of the various waiting time data recorded by the UK Department of health...Waiting time statistics have historically been collected in two separate forms: outpatient and inpatient. The outpatient clock starts ticking when a GP makes a referral, and stops when the patient goes in for a first appointment with a consultant. The inpatient clock starts when the consultant decides hospital treatment is needed, and stops when the patient is treated. There has been no measurement of the time patients wait after the first outpatient appointment before going on the inpatient list. UK parliamentary Library (Jul 2011)

The report highlights the significant role played by the older person's own home: a suitable place to live can mean independence for far longer; it can prevent the need for residential care; it can reduce requirements for care at home; it can mean fewer accidents and hospital admissions; and it can allow people to leave hospital much earlier, with less risk of immediate readmission.
